Clever Culture Systems has completed and invoiced three APAS Independence sales in the first quarter of FY27, putting the microbiology automation company on track for eight sales and new paid evaluations in the first half.

The three instruments were sold to existing customers Novo and AstraZeneca. Clever Culture Systems is also seeking to convert evaluations by two global pharmaceutical customers into purchases during the second quarter, with the resulting orders expected to be invoiced within the period.

If the pipeline progresses as anticipated, first-half commitments would match the eight APAS units sold to pharmaceutical customers across all of FY26. The company did not disclose pricing or expected revenue from the instruments.

The first-half target includes sales and paid evaluations rather than completed sales alone. The timing and completion of prospective transactions remain subject to customer procurement decisions.

Pharmaceutical pipeline broadens

Clever Culture Systems expects to finalise a contract with another top-20 global pharmaceutical company for a paid APAS evaluation in the second quarter of FY27.

That would take the number of pharmaceutical companies that have bought, commenced paid evaluations of, or are actively evaluating the platform to nine. Evaluations test the instrument’s analytical performance and its suitability for possible deployment across a customer’s wider drug manufacturing network.

This process is central to the company’s “land and expand” model. An initial placement can support validation of the technology before a customer considers adoption at additional manufacturing sites, although broader deployments are not guaranteed.

A separate purchase commitment from a new single-site pharmaceutical manufacturer is also in its final stages. Installation and qualification are planned before the end of calendar 2026. That opportunity emerged from an APAS demonstration hosted by AstraZeneca in June.

Clever Culture Systems’ recently announced partnership with PSC Biotech adds another sales channel focused on regional and single-site pharmaceutical manufacturers. The arrangement includes a commitment by PSC Biotech to purchase an instrument.

Automation targets manual laboratory processes

APAS Independence uses artificial intelligence and machine-learning software to image, analyse and interpret microbiology culture plates. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use the platform to read environmental monitoring plates, while clinical laboratories use it as an in vitro diagnostic for infectious diseases.

According to Clever Culture Systems, APAS remains the only artificial intelligence technology cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration for automated culture plate reading. Thermo Fisher Scientific is its exclusive distributor to clinical customers in the United States and selected European countries.

Customer presentations by senior quality-control and microbiology executives from CSL and AstraZeneca highlighted the commercial rationale behind the technology. The presentations identified manual processing, human-error risk and data integrity as issues in current environmental monitoring workflows, while outlining central validation as a potential pathway to deployment across multiple sites.

For shareholders, the next test is conversion. The three invoiced first-quarter sales are complete, but much of the stated first-half momentum depends on evaluations, procurement discussions and purchase commitments becoming firm orders on the timetable outlined by management.
