ION Video has begun independent testing of its video virtualisation technology, the first step in a two-phase process that could lead to a Nordic data centre operator paying at least A$1 million for a larger trial.

Swinburne University of Technology will assess whether ION’s system can meet two commercial thresholds: a minimum 30% increase in capacity and a 30% reduction in operating costs compared with traditional rendered-video workflows.

ION says preliminary internal modelling on AWS servers produced improvements beyond both thresholds, but those results have not been independently validated. Swinburne will design the tests, select comparison systems, measure results and control the analysis and conclusions.

Preliminary findings are expected within three months, with a detailed report due within six months. The work will cost ION approximately A$110,000 plus GST and cloud usage costs.

Conditional route to a paid Nordic trial

ION has also signed a 12-month strategic partnership with Swedish advisory and investment firm Priority Impact AB, which will seek participants for the second phase if the Swinburne assessment is successful.

Priority Impact intends to run a competitive tender among Nordic data centre operators. The successful operator would host an exclusive trial in its laboratory, pay ION a minimum A$1 million fee and separately cover the trial costs.

Priority Impact has spoken with several operators, including Telia and Fossefall, which have expressed interest subject to ION achieving the two performance thresholds. No operator has yet committed to the trial.

Priority Impact will receive a commission equal to 20% of the pre-tax tender amount accepted by ION. It may take that commission in cash or, subject to shareholder approval, ION shares priced at the five-day volume-weighted average price when the tender is formally accepted.

ION retains discretion over whether phase two proceeds and which operator is selected. Progress depends on the phase-one results and an operator agreeing to acceptable terms, meaning the A$1 million payment is not yet contracted revenue.

Licence opportunity remains uncommitted

After completing phase two, the selected operator would have the right to negotiate an exclusive Nordic licence for at least two years. ION expects any licence to include integration, enablement and annual licensing fees, although its scope and pricing would be negotiated separately. There is no guarantee that a licence will be signed or generate revenue.

ION’s patented technology virtualises video at the file-architecture level. Instead of rendering and storing every new version as a separate file, its system assembles versions from a single master during playback. The trial will examine the resulting effects on computing, storage, energy use and cost in cloud environments, with the findings then used to assess implications for larger data centres.

The program is the first of six proposed validation trials and follows ION’s A$4.25 million placement announced in September 2026 to accelerate technology validation. For shareholders, the immediate test is whether independent results support the performance claims needed to unlock the Nordic tender process.
