0:00 / 2:53Orthocell’s 12%-owned strategic partner Marine Biomedical has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance for PearlBone, allowing the marine-derived bone graft substitute to be marketed in the United States for its cleared indications.
The decision removes a key regulatory hurdle for PearlBone and gives Orthocell potential exposure to a third area of tissue repair alongside its existing nerve and tendon technologies. However, Orthocell does not yet hold the distribution rights: it has a first right of refusal over global distribution, with any involvement in the U.S. launch still subject to exercising those rights and agreeing definitive commercial terms.
Orthocell invested a total of A$1.05 million in Marine Biomedical, lifting its equity interest to 12% in January 2026. The investment provides direct exposure to the value of the private company as PearlBone advances towards commercialisation, while the distribution option could allow Orthocell to use its existing U.S. surgeon relationships, distributor network and commercial infrastructure.
No launch date, sales forecast or prospective distribution economics were disclosed.
From pearl shell to bone repair
PearlBone is manufactured from sustainably sourced pearl shell from Western Australia’s Kimberley region. The biomaterial uses nacre — the biomineralised structure of pearl shell — to support bone repair and regeneration, with potential applications across orthopaedic, trauma and reconstructive surgery.
Marine Biomedical produces PearlBone at a purpose-built facility in Broome, Western Australia. The FDA clearance follows scientific development, preclinical evaluation, manufacturing validation and regulatory preparation.
The company is now working on manufacturing readiness, market development and engagement with prospective commercial and clinical partners ahead of its planned U.S. introduction. Clearance permits marketing for the product’s cleared indications, but commercial performance will depend on the remaining launch preparations and market adoption.
Portfolio expansion remains conditional
For Orthocell, PearlBone offers a possible extension into bone regeneration without the company having developed the product internally. Its current portfolio includes Striate+, a collagen membrane used in dental-guided bone regeneration, and Remplir, its peripheral nerve repair product, which recently gained U.S. clearance and has recorded initial sales through specialist distributors.
Orthocell also has SmrtGraft for tendon repair and is progressing its tendon cell therapy in the United States. PearlBone could broaden that portfolio further, although Orthocell’s commercial role remains contingent on future agreements.
Orthocell Chair John Van Der Wielen said the investment was made “to secure exposure to an innovative bone regeneration technology with the potential to complement Orthocell's established nerve and tendon repair portfolio.”
The immediate value of the FDA decision is therefore twofold: it advances Marine Biomedical’s lead product towards U.S. sales and strengthens the strategic value of Orthocell’s minority holding and distribution option. The next material steps will be Marine Biomedical’s launch preparations and whether Orthocell converts its first right of refusal into a definitive distribution arrangement.
